The photographs in the Meditations series handle the relationship between subject and background. Wilma Hurskainen’s (b. 1979) photos ponder whether we want to blend in with our surroundings or create contrast with them. If the object blends into the background, does it mimic the surrounding reality like a chameleon, or does the environment overwhelm the object? Where is the borderline?
The inspiration for the series’ photographs came from a bodily experience gained during a meditation practice, through a certain dissolution of one’s own boundaries. She set out to achieve a similar experience through photography. At the same time, the artist wanted to encourage herself to stop and calm down, to allow herself the chance to connect with the world around her through her senses.
When you look at the Skyline work shot in New Jersey, USA, you might wonder whether it is a picture of a city or a woman. Is the photo of a woman in a sequin dress or New York City in the night lights?
