Hannes Heikura leads the viewer to the boundaries of light and darkness, to the ultimate core of photography - the depiction of light. Working with the means of black and white photography, Heikura gives light the leading role in his pictures, without the noise of colour. The metropolis photographed by Heikura is a landscape of the mind undefined in both time and space. It is a non-space with overtones of film noir and Sin City, an immaterial state of mind, where light and shade engage in an endless dance continuously redefining their mutual relationship. In Hannes Heikura's photographs, the city is given a previously unseen interpretation as the scene of dark spaces, shadows and blinding light. Dark Zone is a story of today's world - of light and shadow - marked by the photographer's strong artistic vision.

Hannes Heikura (born 1958) has worked as a newspaper photographer and is known for his visually astounding pictures. Heikura has been awarded prizes for his work on several occasions. Dark Zone was photographed in Helsinki between the early winter of 2009 and the late autumn 2010.
